Why have a Project Manager on the customer side in ERP Projects

An ERP system is only as good as its adoption by the people who use it daily. Successful change management is primarily a client-side responsibility. This includes clear communication, thorough training programmes, ongoing stakeholder engagement, and proactively addressing any resistance within the organisation. While the implementation partner provides technical guidance and support, it is the client who leads the cultural transformation, building a collective understanding and commitment to new processes. This leadership is essential for fostering genuine acceptance, maximising the return on your ERP investment, and driving operational efficiency.

A critical, often overlooked factor is the absolute necessity for shared ownership and proactive management from both the client and the implementation partner. True ERP success comes from a strong collaboration where roles are clearly defined: partners deliver expertise in system design and integration, but it’s the client’s leadership, vision, and day-to-day engagement that drive real change.

ERP clients should take note: ERP partners are not magicians, and ERPs are not magic wands. Every transformation is powered by your willingness to own the process, keep your team engaged, and invest in continuous improvement. The ‘magic’ happens only when you fully commit to the project and bring your people along for the journey, ensuring everyone is invested in achieving the project’s goals.
